A Weekend Diary: Dilly-dallying Depression and Fried Food

This weekend was interesting in that I tasted the rainbow when it came to emotions... and I didn't even have to eat any Skittles! Usually, I'm preparing and giving an English lesson on Saturdays except that this time, my student e-mailed me to explain that her daughter was placed in in-home quarantine. If you're thinking… Continue reading A Weekend Diary: Dilly-dallying Depression and Fried Food

Another Year, Gone

Aa~h, the hustle and bustle of preparing for graduation. Another year, gone. Like every school in Japan, I sit here at my desk and watch the other teachers clean, organize, and sort out their remaining business before leaving for new beginnings. Some will retire, some will depart for a fresh school, and some will go… Continue reading Another Year, Gone

Osechi: Cooking for Good Luck

Good afternoon! I was just about to post these pictures on Instagram but thought I’d better talk about them here first. While there are plenty of websites that explain what osechi (お節料理) is, this entry will detail my firsthand experience cooking authentic Japanese foods. Here we go! This is what $80 at the supermarket looks… Continue reading Osechi: Cooking for Good Luck

Ashley Goes to the Konbini

As I was eating my food, I realized that I could do a segment on the things I buy and try out. Unfortunately, the items I'm going to share with you today have already been ingested and are now succumbing to my acid. Wait... that doesn't sound right. Let's try that again! Unfortunately, the items… Continue reading Ashley Goes to the Konbini

A Weekend Diary: The Backwoods

Once upon a time, there was a sporadic blogger who disappeared. She was found a year later, quietly rotting away from overwork and self-imposed stress. If you listen closely, you can hear the tapping from the keys on her laptop and the frantic clicking of her mouse. She now serves as a living reminder to… Continue reading A Weekend Diary: The Backwoods

Long Time, No See

(Translation: Hello, everyone! How are you doing? I’m sorry I took such a long vacation. Many things came up after travelling and I became extremely busy. I had to prepare for graduation and review my English classes. Recently, I moved from Gotemba to Hamamatsu’s northern ward. Compared to Gotemba, there isn’t really anything… Continue reading Long Time, No See

100-yen Splurge

Hello! And Happy New Year! In Japanese, we say, 「明けましておめでとうございます。」(akemashite omedetou gozaimasu) and is often shortened to 「おめでとうございます。」(omedetou gozaimasu).  When you see a friend or a family member for the first time in the new year, you are required to say it. You're also welcome to extend the politeness to strangers but it's not necessary.… Continue reading 100-yen Splurge

Chichibu-no-miya Memorial Park

Are you fond of nature? Do you like to take big whiffs of that fresh mountain air? Does your throat freeze with overwhelming emotion? Your heart is light when you think of the wind making the leaves giggle, the brooks babbling to each other, and the creatures making their chitter-chatter. You want to play with… Continue reading Chichibu-no-miya Memorial Park

The Disease

I think it’s time I talk about “homesickness.” But, before I do, I need to get my thoughts out about what caused it. I was watching a movie called The Little Prince based from a book of the same name. The side story introduced me to this little girl that was surrounded with the pressure… Continue reading The Disease
